Designing a Seamless Payment Gateway for Ria Co: A Conceptual Project

This case study explores the design of a checkout optimization and merchant dashboard solution for Ria Co, a fictional e-commerce platform. The project was developed to demonstrate proficiency in user-centered design principles and effective problem-solving strategies for checkout experiences.

This case study explores the redesign of a fictional e-commerce checkout system and merchant dashboard for Ria Co. The project addresses high cart abandonment rates and the need for a more user-friendly and versatile payment gateway. Through research, user personas, and design iterations, I created a new payment experience that offers multiple payment options, integrates modern digital wallets, and provides a buy-now-pay-later feature. The case study demonstrates my ability to identify user pain points, create impactful solutions, and improve the overall shopping experience for Ria Co’s customers and merchants.

Problem Discovery: Understanding the Fictional Pain Points

Through research and industry-standard insights, I defined the problem areas for Ria Co’s fictional scenario:

1. High Cart Abandonment Rates

Hypothetically, 55% of users abandon their carts at checkout due to a cumbersome payment process.

2. Limited Payment Options

The fictional users desired more payment flexibility, including digital wallets and buy-now-pay-later options.

3. Lack of Merchant Tools

Merchants needed a way to monitor transactions in real time and analyze customer behavior.

Research & Insights: Establishing Context and Personas

I created hypothetical personas to guide the design, including diverse user needs such as young professionals looking for convenience, busy moms seeking food security, and remote workers prioritizing flexibility. These personas shaped the design of the payment gateway and merchant dashboard.

Design Solution: Bringing the Concept to Life

The New Payment Gateway

I designed a fictional gateway that allows users to choose from various payment options—card, wallet, bank transfer, and Buy Now, Pay Later. Each option offers a unique interaction pattern to simulate real-world scenarios.

Merchant Dashboard

The dashboard provides a visual overview of transactions, sales data, and user activities, helping merchants make data-driven decisions even in a fictional environment.

Outcomes & Reflections

Although this project is fictional, it demonstrates my ability to think critically about real-world challenges and create viable design solutions. Key learnings include:

  • Mastering checkout optimization strategies.
  • Enhancing the user experience through multiple payment options.
  • Designing for diverse user personas.
